CHOO Kan Yeep obtained his B.Sc. (Hons.) in Physics from the National University of Malaysia (UKM) in 2001, followed by an M.Eng.Sc. from Multimedia University (MMU) in 2005, and a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Malaya (UM) in 2017. He began his academic career at MMU, serving as a lecturer (2005–2006, 2009–2011), senior lecturer (2011-2021), and associate professor since 2022.
He has held several leadership roles, including Deputy Dean of the Institute for Postgraduate Studies and Program Coordinator for the B.Eng. (Hons.) in Electronics (Optical Engineering). Under his leadership, the program achieved full accreditation from the Engineering Accreditation Council (EAC), Malaysia. He also developed an outcome-based education (OBE) assessment framework, currently implemented in the university’s OBE Camsys module, which has been officially copyrighted. In addition, he led a team in developing the university’s framework for Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and provided training to academic staff on its implementation.
His research spans Monte Carlo simulations of charge carrier transport and impact ionization in semiconductors, anomalous transport in disordered semiconductors using fractional calculus, fractal and wavelet time series analysis, wearable biomedical devices, and smart digital farming systems leveraging machine learning.
Dr. Choo has served as principal investigator and co-researcher on multiple funded projects supported by the MOE Fundamental Research Grant Scheme (FRGS), MOSTI e-Science, MMU Mini Fund, Motorola Foundation International Grant Scheme, and Petronas R&D Grant. He has authored numerous publications in reputed international peer-reviewed journals and conferences.
He was certified as a National Instruments LabVIEW Associate Developer (CLAD) from 2013–2015 and has been a certified Train-the-Trainer (TTT) by Pembangunan Sumber Manusia Berhad (HRDF), Malaysia, since 2014. He is a member of the Institute of Physics (IOP), U.K. (since 2006), a member and life member of the Malaysian Institute of Physics (IFM) (since 2016 and 2018, respectively), and a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), U.S.A. (since 2018).
Currently, he serves as an Executive Committee member of the IEEE Photonics Society Malaysia Chapter (2021–2026).
Fluent in Bahasa Malaysia, English, and Chinese, he enjoys cycling, hiking, fish keeping, and gardening in his free time.
