Biography
Prof. Ir. Dr. Chan Kah Yoong obtained his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Jacobs University Bremen in Germany, in year 2008. Prior to his Ph.D. degree, he completed his M.Sc. in Electronics from Queen's University Belfast in Northern Ireland, United Kingdom, in year 2001, and B.Eng.(Hons) in Electronic and Electrical Engineering from The Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, Scotland, United Kingdom, in year 2000.
With great passions in academia and research for over 20 years of career, Ir. Dr. Chan rose through his career ranks from Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor, to become Full Professor with Faculty of Engineering (FOE) in Multimedia University (MMU) since year 2022. He was the Research Scientist and then the Post-Doctoral Scientist at the Institute of Photovoltaics, Research Center Juelich in Germany, from year 2005 to 2008.
Ir. Dr. Chan is a registered Professional Engineer with Practising Certificate (PEPC) with Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) (Top Tier BEM Professional Engineer) since year 2012, a senior member of United States based The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) since year 2011, and a corporate member of The Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) since year 2011. Having gone through an intensive Train-the-Trainer program endorsed by the Pembangunan Sumber Manusia Berhad (PSMB) under the purview of the Ministry of Human Resources (MOHR), he is also a HRDF certified trainer since year 2015.
Ir. Dr. Chan has significant teaching experiences for undergraduate and postgraduate courses, for students from Universities, and engineers from Industries, across different disciplines in the field of engineering and technology, in particular, in the areas of electrical and electronic technologies, semiconductor technologies, microelectronic and nanotechnologies, and smart electronic technologies. He has obtained numerous teaching merits awarded by the University, which signify his excellent teaching skills.
In the administrative aspects, Ir. Dr. Chan has significant involvements in the accreditation of the Engineering Programs in FOE in MMU, since the inception of the Program accreditation exercise by Engineering Accreditation Council Malaysia (EAC) in year 2009. He was the assistant program coordinator for the Electronic Program from year 2009 until 2015, where he was promoted to be the Chairperson to lead a Research Center in MMU. Throughout his academic career, Ir. Dr. Chan has accumulated valuable experiences in managing Engineering Programs accreditation for different Engineering Programs. In addition to Program accreditation experiences, Ir. Dr. Chan has been playing significant roles in other administrative duties within the Faculty and the University. In FOE, he is currently the Chairperson for the Teaching and Learning Enhancement Committee, carrying the role to improvise the teaching and learning quality of the Faculty, a key committee member for the Marketing & Outreach Strategic Committee, with the role to contribute towards students recruitment and intake for FOE. Ir. Dr. Chan was also a key member for the Professional Development Committee from year 2012 to 2019, with role to promote the professional portfolio of the FOE and to increase the number of Professional Engineer in the Faculty, Exam Moderation Committee from year 2012 to 2019, with role to ensure high quality examination standards across the Faculty, Credit Transfer Committee from year 2008 to 2019, with role to ensure full compliance of credit transfer from other institutions to MMU, Self Appraisal Committee from year 2017 to 2019, to ensure the standard and quality of Engineering Program portfolio in Faculty, apart from constantly taking roles as Lab Supervisors for different teaching and research laboratories in FOE. At University level, Ir. Dr. Chan has been a key member in the University Research Review Committee and Academic Promotion Peer Committee, and University Purchase Evaluation committee on numerous occasions.
Ir. Dr. Chan's research areas are in the smart materials and devices including smart glasses/windows, solar cells, transparent electronic materials and devices, microelectronics and nanotechnology, IoT smart farming technologies, solar energy harvesting applications, and recent renewable green technologies as well as CO2 reduction technologies. From his research background, he has so far led numerous Industry and government research grants (Industry: TM R&D Grant, Toray Science Foundation; Government: FRGS, E-Science, IRPA), which has thus far amounted to more than RM 2 Mil, where he has been the project leader and principal investigator for these grants. He constantly chaired the Board of Examiner (BOE) for Viva Voce Arrangements for Ph.D. and Master degree studies for different Faculties in MMU, beside being appointed as examiners and experts for the Master and Ph.D. thesis examinations, and work completion seminar, respectively. Ir. Dr. Chan is also an active reviewer for research proposal submissions at the Faculty, University, and Government level (MyGrant proposals). With the extensive research involvement, Ir. Dr. Chan is currently a member of Editorial board of World Journal of Condensed Matter Physics (WJCMP, Scientific Research Publishing) with publisher office located in United States. He is a routine reviewer for various international journals including Journal of Non-Crystalline Solids, Journal of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, Surface and Coatings Technology, Solid-State Electronics, Thin Solid Films, Vacuum, Journal of Materials Science: Materials in Electronics, Micro & Nano Letters, Materials Chemistry and Physics, and many more. To date, Ir. Dr. Chan has authored more than 100 indexed international journal publications, which signify his tremendous efforts and leadership in leading and driving his research work. Many of these journals are world reputable Scopus/WoS-Q1/Q2 journals. He has also successfully supervised numerous undergraduate and post-graduate students for their Bachelor of Engineering Degree final year projects, Master of Engineering Degree final year projects, as well as Master (M.Eng.Sci) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) By Research Dissertation projects.
On 30 August 2022, Ir. Dr. Chan was conferred the prestigious International Award, “IAAM Scientist Award”, by International Association of Advanced Materials (IAAM), Ulrika, Sweden, for his contribution in the area of Smart Materials development to the global scientific community. This is an international recognition and honor to his research development and innovation contribution to the society and community.
Due to his vast technical expertises in the engineering technologies, Ir. Dr. Chan has been invited to conduct several trainings and consultancies with external companies, among which, Kulim High Tech Park, USAINS Holding Sdn Bhd (USAINS), and Kespro Consultants Sdn Bhd.
Currently, Prof. Ir. Dr. Chan serves as a Chairperson for a Research Center under Faculty of Engineering of MMU-Centre for Advanced Devices and Systems (CADS) with the role to promote the research performance for the FOE and University.
