Biography
Professor Dr. Ir. Sim Kok Swee and his research team in medical imaging and biomaterials have developed robust methodologies to detect breast cancer, early infarct, endoscopy and tuberculosis. In addition, his team also developed new techniques for signal to noise ratio (SNR) measurement. When interacting with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), these techniques enable auto real-time noise quantization and self-improvement for SEM image quality. Another important contribution by his team is in prediction of signal as well as noise from the images. This enhances the analysis skills to study the image mechanism at nano-scale level.
This fundamental mechanism has wide applications. For example, Dr. Sim is now investigating the application of the image SNR estimation technique onto Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) system and noise filtering techniques which are not only limited to medical images and electron microscope images, but also applicable to general images.
Dr. Sim’s research projects are supported by grants from Multimedia University and government agency funds. Many findings have been published in international journals as well as local and overseas conferences, and attracted attention of significant national media including Malaysia’s television station RTM2. Furthermore, Dr. Sim has won several international awards from the 2005 and 2006 World Conference in Applied Computing (USA) and 2008 IEEE conference at UK. For national level achievements, he won the Gold Medal Award in the Invention, Innovative & Technology Exhibition (ITEX) 2008, 2009, 2010; Bio Malaysia Award 2009, 2010; Malaysia Technology Expo 2011, AIK2011. He is currently working closely with various local and overseas institutions and hospitals such as Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering from National University of Singapore, Applied Physics Department from Curtin University of Technology, Australia, Malacca General Hospital, Hospital, Pantai Ayer Keroh and Putra Specialist Hospital.
In addition, Dr. Sim is one of panel of Malaysia Engineering Accreditation council. He has visited few universities to assess university engineering programs.
In year 2014, he received the recipient as Top Research Scientist Award from Academic Science Malaysia. He is also the recipient for TM group CEO award in year 2015.
