Biography
Prof. Ir. Dr. Hin-Yong Wong received his B.Eng. (First Class Hons.), M.Sc.(Eng)(with Distinction) and PhD in Electronic and Electrical Engineering from University of Sussex, University of Leeds and University of Glasgow respectively in the United Kingdom. During his studies in the UK, he received various prestigious scholastic awards such the UK Tetley &Lupton Scholarship award , the Overseas Research Students (ORS) Awards (U.K.) and University of Glasgow Postgraduate Research Scholarship awards.
Prof. Wong joined the Multimedia University (MMU), Cyberjaya, as a pioneer staff member as a lecturer in the Faculty of Engineering since its inception in 1999. Since then he rose to the rank of Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor and now a Professor and the Vice President of Academic & International Relations. Prior to that, he was appointed as the Dean of Institute for Postgraduate Studies, Director, Research Institute Digital Enterprise and Dean of Faculty of Engineering. As the Dean of Faculty of Engineering for almost 8 years , he overseen more than 120 staff and 15 engineering undergraduates and postgraduates programmes. During his tenure as the Dean , he is proud to witness the growth of the faculty from strength to strength . Some of the notable achievements were full accreditation granted for all the engineering programmes under his care, development of new postgraduate engineering programmes , high number of staff with professional engineers and equivalent qualification for all programmes, the establishment of Graduate Institute of Engineering, average graduate employability of the engineering graduates of above 97 %, MMU being ranked Top 200 in the World by QS Working ranking exercise for the discipline of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and many more . Prof. Wong is an researcher, he is currently supervising/co-supervising over 30 Phd and Master students where many of them have successfully graduated, completed thesis and on thesis writing up stages. As of today he has published book chapter, review chapter, encyclopedia and over 120 international research articles in renowned ISI and Scopus indexed journals and conferences based on his research findings. Thus far he has successfully secured a total research grant of over RM 6.5 millions for his research projects from various external goverment and industry funding sources. Heis regularly invited to serve as International Advisory Board memeber, Conference chair, Keynote speaker, Technical committee to international and national conferences. His expertise covers wireless communication, semiconductor, nanotechnology, photonics and renewable energy. His research expertise established has resulted in invitations to provide consultancy services to many semiconctor and cleanroom related multi-national companies and foundries.
Prof Wong is very active in his own engineering professional bodies and societies both at the International and national levels to promote engineering. He is a Chartered Engineer & Professional Engineer registered with Engineering Council United Kingdom & Board of Engineers Malaysia respectively. Advisor and founding advisors to The Institution of Engineering and Technology(IET-UK) , the international society of SPIE (USA) and Optical Society(USA) local student chapters. He is currently serving as Advisory board member and external assessor to various Institution of higher learning in the country. He is a senior accreditation panel for the national Engineering Accreditation Council(EAC) , Engineering Technology Accreditation Council (ETAC) as well as a board member of the national IEM accreditation board. Effective June 2020, he is appointed to serve as the Associate Director of Enginering Accreditation Department, Board of Engineers Malaysia . He was appointed by Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) KPT to serve as Malaysia University Rating and Ranking Exercise (SETARA ) Auditor.
Prof Wong’s contributions to academic and the engineering professional over the years have earned him recognitions nationally and international. Among the awards and recognitions he received are his election to the grade of Fellow of IET(United Kingdom) , Fellow, ASEAN Academy of Engineering and Technology (AAET), Fellow of The Institution Of Engineers Malaysia( IEM)IEM , The IET Malaysia Young Engineer Award, selected as an elite member of the Young Scientist Network (YSN) of Academy Science Malaysia (ASM) , winner & honouree of the 2015 Ten Outstanding Young Malaysians(TOYM) Award by the Junior Chamber International, recipient of The National Outstanding Educator Award 2017 awarded by Private Education Co-operative Of Malaysia (EduCoop) in conjunction with the national Teachers Day Celebration.
