Biography
Duu Sheng obtained his PhD in Electronics Engineering from the University of Sheffield, UK and his MPhil and BSc(Hons) in Physics from University of Malaya, Malaysia. Dr.Ong joined Multimedia University in 1999 and obtained his Professorship at the Faculty of Engineering in 2009. He was the Programme Coordinator of MEng in Microelectronics (2001-2006), Director of Research Management Centre (2008), Dean of Institute for Postgraduate Studies (2009-2010) and Vice President of Academics (2011-2014). Currently, he is a member of MMU Senate.
Prof. Ong is a Humboldt Research Fellow, Germany since 2006 and he was awarded the Royal Society UK Study Visit to Sheffield in 2003. He is a Fellow of Institute of Physics Malaysia and he holds the Chartered Physicist (CPhys) of Institute of Physics, UK, since 2000 and Chartered Engineer (CEng) of Engineering Council, UK, since 2014. He is an alumnus of German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) through the participation of the International Dean’s Course (IDC) South East Asia in 2008-2009.
After he relinquished the VP position, Prof. Ong has been serving as a resource person for various higher education leadership and quality assurance training programmes. Since 2014 he is a trainer of the International Dean’s Course (IDC) for conducting trainings in Germany and Southeast Asia including mentoring the participants’ project action plan. He was invited as a member of the Technical Team for ASEAN Quality Assurance project organized by DAAD, AQAN, HRK, ENQA, SEAMEO RIHED, AUN and University of Potsdam in 2015, and later he joined the team as a trainer and mentor for ASEAN-TrainIQA Programme. He also served as a resource person for SEAMEO RIHED, EU ASEAN SHARE Programme, UNESCO International Institute for Educational Planning (IIEP), DAAD DIES National Multiplication Training (NMT) & Training of trainers Workshops, Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme (MTCP), The Malaysian Higher Education Institutions Quality Assurance Network (MyQAN).
Since 2008, he has conducted various programme and institutional audits for the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and he was appointed as a Principal Assessor in 2018. Currently, he is a member of MQA accreditation committee. Prof.Ong was the Malaysia Research Assessment (MyRA) assessor from 2019-2022. He and DAAD DIES Malaysian alumni conducted the first DIES National Multiplication Trainings in Higher Education Management for Academic Administrators in Malaysia from 2013-2014. Prof.Ong and IDC Malaysian alumni initatied the inaugural International Deans’ Course Malaysian Chapter (MyIDC) 2019/2020 under the Higher Education Leadership Academy (AKEPT), Ministry of Education Malaysia with support from DIES NMT and completed MyIDC cohort 2 in 2021/2022 and cohort 3 in 2022/2023.
His current research interests center on THz electronic devices and modelling of novel low-dimensional materials.
