Biography
Ir. Dr. Siow Chun Lim is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Engineering, Multimedia University (MMU), Cyberjaya, Malaysia. He is currently the Coordinator of Industrial Training Programme and was the immediate past Programme Coordinator of Electrical Engineering, commencing from June 2017 with the primary responsibility of ensuring that the programme is of quality as advocated by the Engineering Accreditation Council (EAC) of the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM). His teaching interest includes high voltage engineering, engineering pedagogy, electrotechnical standards education, renewable energy, power system operation and control and power station. Research-wise, he is passionate in the area of lifecycle assessment, electrical earthing, lightning protection, engineering and standards education. He is wast the past Chair of Centre for Electric Energy and Automation (CEEA) which was set up to focus on research and development in the areas of electric energy and automation and their applications for the benefits of humanities in general and manufacturing industries in particular.
Ir. Dr. Siow has been actively contributing to the engineering community since 2016. At the ASEAN level, he is currently serving as the Secretary of National Working Group of ASEAN Engineering Inspectorate- Electric Installation (AEI-EI) under the ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organisation (AFEO). Within the span of 2 years, he has played a key role in publishing the White Paper for Electrical Installation Standards & Regulations In Buildings Amongst ASEAN Countries which was launched at the ASEAN Electrotechnical Symposium & Exhibition by the AFEO Secretary General in December 2018. Since 2019, he has been actively promoting awareness on standards for electrical engineers amongst engineering undergraduates in numerous higher learning institutions which offers electrical and electronic engineering programme. To date, he has spoken at more than 20 universities in Malaysia with his highly focussed aim of making electrical engineering undergraduates more industry-ready by gaining early exposure to electrotechnical standards.
At the national level, he was elected to serve as the General Committee member of Electrical Engineering Technical Division of The Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM EETD) for the 2017/2018 and 2018-2019 sessions. He then moved on to serve as the Secretary/Treasurer of IEM EETD for the 2019/2020 session before eventually became the Chair of IEM EETD from 2022-2024. At present, he is the Honorary Treasurer of IEM. Since joining IEM back in early 2016, he has organised numerous technical talks, visits, seminars, workshops and symposium to aid the dissemination of knowledge amongst the engineering community. He was also the founding Chair of the Electrical Engineering Final Year Project Competition which was successfully organised in 2016 and 2017. Thus far, Ir. Dr Siow has published more than 90 technical articles which can be accessed here. He was recipient of the IEM Young Engineer Award 2023 and was conferred the AFEO Honorary Member also in 2023.
At the international level, Ir. Dr. Siow was the IEC Young Professional representing Malaysia since 2017. He has also initiated a benchmarking visit to Tsinghua University back in 2018 for an exchange session which has mutually benefited MMU and the said institution. In 2019, he managed to appoint the External Examiner for the Bachelor of Electrical Engineering programme through his participation in International Symposium on Lightning Protection (SIPDA). In 2023, he was invited to be a Visiting Academic at Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences (SIMATS) where he conducted the lecture on Engineering Electromagnetics for the students. Currently, he is the national representive in IEC TC 81 (Lightning Protection Technical Committee). Ir. Dr. Siow has delivered guest lectures and keynote speeches in Vietnam, Myanmar, Cambodia, Brunei, India and The Philippines since 2018.
In November 2019, he founded LiRESAS Sdn. Bhd., a spinoff company under MMU which provides consultancy on lightning risk assessment and electrical earthing systems. Ir. Dr. Siow has served as the Organizing Chairperson of various conferences namely eureca 2016, MECON 2019 and IESE 2024.
