Biography
Prof. Koo has dedicated over 25 years to teaching and research at the Faculty of Creative Multimedia, Multimedia University (MMU). Her work focuses on technology-enhanced learning and improving quality of life. She has authored and co-authored more than 100 articles in top peer-reviewed academic journals and conference proceedings. Prof. Koo holds copyrights for character designs, video interviews with cancer survivors, a wellness micro-website, and gamification workshop methodologies promoting green behaviors. Her research specializations include media usage, design, and content creation to promote wellness, lifelong learning, and the multi-disciplinary Health Education for All (HEFA) initiative.
In her research experience, Prof. Koo has been the project leader for the Research and Innovation of Private Higher Education Network (RIPHEN)’s Joint Research Project, leading a collaboration of seven Malaysian universities on “Digital Futures.” She also led the sub-project “Future Proofing for Sustainable Cities” under RIPHEN, facilitating assessment, simulation, and prediction for smart cities. From a year in 2022, she led the international research project “Designing Mobile Services for Ageing Women in Malaysia,” one of 20 selected proposals under the “Gendered Design in STEAM” program by Carleton University, funded by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Canada.
Nationally, Prof. Koo has completed projects funded by the Ministry of Higher Education, including “Affective Roles of Ubiquitous Learning in a Patient-Centered Health Care Model for Malaysian Hospitals” and “eHealth Modality Framework for Mental Wellness Among Digital Talents.” She is currently leading a team researching teaching models for building resilience among senior students in higher institutions.
Prof. Koo graduated with a Bachelor of Science and Computers degree from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in 1995 and a PhD in Educational Technology from Multimedia University in 2006. During her academic career at MMU, she has held appointments as the Deputy Director for the Industrial Collaborations & Engagement Centre, the Deputy Director of The Digital Cities Research Institute, and as Deputy Dean and Dean of the Faculty of Creative Multimedia, and the Learning Institute for Empowerment, respectively.
She is an alumna of the International Dean Course (IDC 2014/2015) and has served as a trainer and committee member for the International Deans’ Course Malaysian Chapter (2019/2020 and 2021), organized by the Higher Education Leadership Academy (AKEPT), Malaysia Ministry of Higher Education. Prof. Koo is also the chairperson for the 4th International Conference on Creative Multimedia 2024 (ICCM2024), co-located with the Digital Futures International Congress (DIFCON2024). She has been invited to deliver speeches and lead knowledge transfer programs on growth mindset, academic resilience, and lifelong learning.
Her green research initiatives include leading the Edcraft upcycling project, which focuses on gamification to improve recycling behaviors, in collaboration with her PhD student and local and international researchers. Prof. Koo has been a professional member of the Malaysia Board of Technologists (MBOT) for Art and Design since 2021. Since 2012, she volunteers with the NGO Tzu Chi Foundation, contributing to social and green initiatives in her community. In recent years, she serves as an advisor for student projects on personal social responsibility and sustainable society.
