Biography
Dr. Wan Noorshahida Mohd Isa is currently an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Computing and Informatics, Multimedia University, Cyberjaya campus, Malaysia. She is an engineering alumnus of Vanderbilt University, USA with a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (magna cum laude) who then ventures into the computing field. She completed her Masters degree from the University of Southampton in the Great Britain and she went on to pursue her Doctorate degree at Multimedia University and later registered as a Professional Technologist with Malaysia Board of Technologist (MBOT). She was a Laureate of the France-Malaysia Collaboration Programme for Joint Research 2022 (MyTIGER 2022), which is a research programme under the Embassy of France to Malaysia. Her specific research area is on visual analytics, where she designs and develops machine learning models for use on videos and images. Her PhD thesis was about the analysis on gait biometrics between siblings.
While she was at the University of Southampton, she had the opportunity to work under the guidance of Professor Mark Nixon, who is the pioneer of human biometrics using gait. At the start of her Ph.D. she was invited to be a key matter expert for the Malaysia's National Biometric Roadmap of 2008. She collaborated on two R&D work with Center of Advanced Informatics, MIMOS on gait biometric. Since then, she has been actively conducting research on applications of machine learning in other fields such as in agriculture specifically on helping the stingless honey bee farmers in beekeeping by means of digital technology. She secured a research grant amounting to RM88,000 to support this work and partly owned a copyright on an identification system of stingless bees. In 2020, she helped the university to secure an industrial grant from the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) to setup a Center of Excellence on Big Data and Blockchain Technology. Then in 2023, she secured another industrial research grant from Telekom Research and Development Sdn Bhd to perform research on usage of visual analytics in the telecommunication industry.
On the leadership front, she has held the post as the Deputy Dean for the Faculty of Computing and Informatics (FCI) at MMU during the years of 2016-2020. She serves as a committee member in the Malaysia TRIZ Innovation Association (MyTRIZ) since 2019. She was one of the Curriculum Advisory Committee under the NBOS-TVET Project: Talent Development in Digital Technology / Modular Diploma of the Ministry of Higher Education. She is the advisor for the MMU student club Sekretariat Sekolah@MMU. She is a certified MyTRIZ (Malaysia TRIZ - Theory of Innovative Problem Solving) Level 1 Instructor and Level 3 Practitioner, a certified RapidMiner Machine Learning Professional, and a certified ISACA Cybersecurity Fundamental professional. Additionally, she is a member of IEEE, IEEE Internet of Things Community and IEEE Future Directions Community, and MyTRIZ (Malaysia TRIZ Innovation Association). She has often been invited to give motivational talks to Malaysian young talents on pursuing STEM, particularly ICT. To her, the future lies with ICT and young talents need to be digital creators for the future of Malaysia.
