Ezzah Mahmud is a Malaysian documentary filmmaker, writer, and published translator from Penang whose work explores silence, memory, womanhood, spirituality, grief, and the emotional landscapes of waiting and caregiving. She holds a BA in Film and Video from the University of South Wales and an MA in Film Directing (Documentary) from the Edinburgh College of Art at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, where she developed a strong interest in observational and poetic documentary forms. Her filmmaking often centres on intimate human experiences, emotional resilience, and quiet, contemplative storytelling.
Her award-winning short documentary The Weight of Silence received a Special Mention at the 2024 SeaShorts Film Festival for its poetic exploration of two sisters growing up with a mother living with schizophrenia. Alongside her filmmaking practice, Ezzah is also an accomplished author whose reflective and spiritually grounded writing resonates strongly with Malaysian readers. Her book The Art of Waiting earned 3rd Place in the Non-Fiction category at the 2025 Popular The Star Readers’ Choice Awards, while her subsequent book, When Worries Turn to Hope, went on to win First Prize in the English Non-Fiction category at the 2026 awards.
As a translator, Ezzah has translated internationally recognised works into Malay, including Reclaim Your Heart and The Little Prince. Beyond writing and directing, she has worked across documentary production, television, arts programming, and social impact storytelling in Malaysia. Her current creative and academic interests focus on observational documentary, silence, stillness, and liminal time, themes she is further developing through new documentary projects including On the Other End and her ongoing research into the aesthetics of waiting in cinema.
